Synesthesia

Glass - Wood - Acrylic Paint

Synesthesia was the first sculpture that I finished since graduating in 2018. It took approximately 2 years to conceive and finish. I started out with the skull knowing it was apart of a sculpture and then went from there. The frame of the sculpture is made from painted wood and the transparent sections are made from glass. This represents a major step in the development of the style of sculpture I am developing in many ways. In my previous pieces “Cognizance” and “Infinite Muse” there is glass and wood and paint in the sculptures but it is exclusively glass on top of wood. In “Synesthesia” the glass and the wood are interconnected with one another all throughout the piece. At no point is there a clear separation of materials and that is a major step and achievement for me.

There is alot going on so here is the codex for translation:

Deer skull: Mysterious totem of life and death

This piece is about my first real psychedelic/mystical experience where all of my senses crossed into one another to form supersenses (I think) where I was able to see, feel and hear plants breathing and moving in rhythmic patterns.

The trip intensified and I could see channels of life force running through all living things and recently dead things in particular a deer skull. The skull was rattling and moving in a complex deliberate pattern that I could totally perceive with all of my senses. To the point where it was in my hands doing the rattling motion where I could feel the bone plates moving and and shifting and yet to outside viewers my hands and the skull were totally still.

The trip got even more intense as I went outside. I laid down under a tree in my friends backyard and I fell into a trance state. My ego totally dissolved and I became one with the tree to the point where I was just another limb.

The next part was so unbelievable that it took me years to come to terms with and even longer to put into words. The tree connected me with the conciousness of the planet and I experienced the most intimate, most uncaring, most unconditional love I've ever experienced ever.

In my head a mantra appeared. It went "Mother ; Son" back and forth with what seemed like both 5 minutes and an eternity but ended up being around 3 hours in our time. When the trance state ended I was left with two very crucial pieces of advice and a new perspective and view of what we call "reality." The two pieces of advice showed up in my head as:

"You can leave nature but nature will never leave you."

"Pain is important. Dont take it personally." (Slight paraphrase from the original.)

Whoever I was before that day had died a thousand life times. The wisdom and love of this conciousness I encountered changed me forever. 6 years later I had the vision for this piece. And 8 years later it was finished and presented to you all here.
